Announcing Up to $1.5 Million in New Funding Opportunities for EdTech Entrepreneurs
NewSchools Venture Fund is launching a new funding opportunity for education technology innovators: the NewSchools Ignite Special Education Challenge. This initiative invites edtech entrepreneurs whose products support Pre-K through 12th grade students with disabilities. The application window is open from February 16 through March 12.
About the NewSchools Ignite Accelerator
NewSchools Ignite is a virtual edtech accelerator designed to address gaps in the education technology market. The program supports entrepreneurs developing tools that enable schools and teachers to tailor instruction, maximize instructional time, and use resources more effectively. While several edtech segments have seen rapid growth, other areas—such as tools for learners with disabilities—have lagged in innovation. The Special Education Challenge focuses on driving product development in that under-served space.
NewSchools Ignite Special Education Challenge
“We always begin by listening to educators,” said Tonika Cheek Clayton, Managing Partner at NewSchools Venture Fund. “It seems intuitive that students with disabilities might need significant academic support, but our conversations with experts made clear the higher incidence of adverse outcomes for these students—such as achievement gaps, lower graduation rates, and reduced employment opportunities. More importantly, we learned how thoughtfully designed edtech tools can make a difference.”
To shape this challenge, NewSchools conducted market research with approximately 40 educators, thought leaders, and entrepreneurs. That research highlighted several priority areas where edtech can serve students with disabilities more effectively:
- Making rigorous academic content accessible to a wider range of learners;
- Encouraging communication and collaboration among diverse learners;
- Supporting executive functioning and student agency;
- Using data to empower students, families, and educators.
The Special Education Challenge seeks a diverse cohort of entrepreneurs creating high-quality tools that address these needs. Funding awards will range from $50,000 to $150,000 per recipient, with the total funding pool reaching up to $1.5 million. Award recipients will also receive management assistance and access to a community of practice that enables collaboration and peer learning among funded organizations. Ventures selected for funding will be notified by April 28.
Entrepreneurs interested in applying should visit the NewSchools Ignite Special Education Challenge page on the NewSchools Venture Fund website for application details, eligibility criteria, and submission instructions. The application period is February 16–March 12.
Why This Challenge Matters
Students with disabilities often face structural and instructional barriers that limit access to rigorous content and sustained academic progress. By focusing investment, expertise, and collaboration on this area, NewSchools aims to surface products that can be implemented at scale and that respond directly to educator needs in classrooms and special education programs.
The combination of targeted funding, management support, and a connected cohort experience is intended to accelerate product development, testing, and adoption in real classroom settings. The program emphasizes solutions that prioritize accessibility, evidence-based design, reliable data practices, and practical implementation strategies for schools.
