The reach and richness of digital curriculum continue to expand, transforming how students are engaged and instructed. Tens of millions of digital learning objects now exist online, including vast collections within free and open educational resources (OER). Where educators once chose from thousands of textbooks and print options, the digital landscape now presents an even larger array of companies and formats, from simple text files to immersive virtual reality experiences.
Educators nationwide are now involved in a continual search and vetting process for quality digital materials. Platforms such as Knowstory.com aim to help by enabling teachers and schools to create personal inventories aligned to standards, lesson time, and other requirements. These inventories can be shared or copied, helping to organize the immense volume of digital resources and making it easier for educators to find and reuse quality materials.
School leaders are increasingly focused on differentiating types of digital learning objects and ensuring continuity of instruction. Digital stewardship presents new operational challenges: files, lesson plans, and interactive courseware do not transfer the same way a textbook does when a substitute teacher steps in. Teachers traditionally curated and sequenced these pieces manually, tagging and organizing them to form coherent learning paths. Even with careful curation, however, isolated objects can lack the broader scope and sequence that a full textbook or well-designed courseware typically provides.
Chunks & Lesson Planning vs. Courseware
Discrete chunks—individual videos, short readings, or single-concept activities—are inherently nonsequential and often require a teacher’s contextualization to become meaningful. That curation and sequencing is essentially digital lesson planning. While the source material might be openly licensed or copyrighted, the lesson framework that a school or district constructs around those materials is often treated as institutional intellectual property, a reality many teachers do not fully realize.
There is a fine line between creating a unique pedagogical work and compiling existing resources. As teachers mix and match content, questions about copyright and ownership will grow. For many educators, chunking content is liberating because they need only use required concepts, not entire textbooks. But assembling those chunks demands more time and expertise than adopting a single piece of full courseware.

Products that feel clumsy or require excessive troubleshooting will frustrate users and reduce instructional impact.
When learning objects are discrete, they increase the teacher’s workload for curating and framing. But when students themselves can discover and assemble resources, that process can foster deeper inquiry and ownership of learning—if the school’s systems permit student-driven exploration rather than restricting discovery to teacher-selected materials.
Optimum Digital
Research and practical experience suggest teachers see the most benefit when at least 60 percent of instructional materials are optimally aggregated digital learning objects or full courseware, with screen-based instruction occupying no more than about 40 percent of lesson time. The remaining time should be devoted to discussion, labs, hands-on projects, and teacher-led activities. Robust courseware and autonomous collections free teachers to focus on individualized instruction, social-emotional support, and the human interactions that balance digital learning.
The growth of both commercial and free courseware offers the opportunity to restore teachers’ time for direct student engagement, while providing consistent, personalized learning pathways for students. Effective adoption requires teachers to learn how the courseware functions and how to supplement it thoughtfully—strategies similar to how educators historically used and adapted textbooks.
