Dimensions to Math Equity — Learning Leadership Society Podcast

Representation in problem contexts, recognition of diverse mathematical practices, and affirming interactions between teachers and students all contribute to learners seeing themselves as legitimate participants in mathematics.
Young’s perspective reframes equity work as both structural and relational. Structural work includes policies, resource allocation, and curriculum design; relational work includes classroom practices, teacher-student relationships, and community engagement. When designers and educators attend to both aspects—material access and the social dimensions of agency, power, identity, and belonging—learning environments become more equitable and more likely to support sustained mathematical growth for all students.
