It can be disruptive and may prompt caution, but used thoughtfully it offers substantial benefits for distance education and online learning. Rather than fearing AI, educators should focus on how to govern and integrate it responsibly to improve student outcomes and prepare learners for modern workplaces.

Use-Cases for AI in Education

At the University of Phoenix, we design AI use in the classroom to mirror practical workplace scenarios while strengthening students’ critical thinking and evaluative judgment. For example, in a marketing course an assignment might ask students to prompt an AI tool to generate several marketing messages or sales pitches for a product. The student’s task is then to evaluate and deconstruct those outputs, explain which versions work best and why, and produce a final message that blends AI-generated content with their own reasoning. These exercises teach students how to leverage AI professionally and build mental models for using AI as a learning partner—beyond the common perception of AI as merely a shortcut for cheating or plagiarism.

Leveraging AI to Improve Efficiencies

Modern AI language models help curriculum designers refine tone, clarity, and accessibility. An instructional designer can ask AI to take highly technical text—such as a description of nuclear fission—and rewrite it in a conversational style for first-year students. In corporate training, AI can adapt core concepts like workplace diversity or leadership to different audiences, producing content tailored to executives, managers, or new hires, and even generating quiz questions aligned to learning outcomes. Using AI this way saves time and enables more personalized learning materials, allowing designers to serve diverse learner needs more efficiently. Our experience is that AI acts like a collaborative colleague, offering suggestions and alternative approaches rather than replacing human expertise.

AI reflects the data on which it was trained, so its outputs can have gaps or inaccuracies depending on the request and the prompt quality. There are clear advantages to integrating AI into education. It can accelerate content creation, diversify examples, and expose learners to new perspectives that they can then apply in assignments or workplace tasks. When students actively use AI outputs to complete real activities, the knowledge moves from theoretical to practical application, reinforcing learning. On the downside, misunderstanding AI’s limitations is a frequent pitfall. Some users mistakenly treat AI outputs as authoritative and skip necessary editing or fact-checking. Administrators and instructors must also be vigilant about plagiarism and misuse, designing assessments and policies that encourage ethical, authentic work. Overall, the promise of AI is significant, but it requires careful governance, ongoing training for staff and students, and clear expectations about when and how to use it.

It has not replaced personnel at our institution; instead, teams view it as a support tool that can enrich designer output and enable creative, realistic classroom exercises. There is excitement about experimenting with new activities that mirror professional requests students will encounter on the job. As AI continues to evolve, many employees are eager to discover responsible, innovative applications that deepen learning while preserving academic integrity.

Practical Recommendations

To make the most of AI in education, institutions should: provide clear guidance on ethical use and citation; train faculty and designers on prompt engineering and model limitations; incorporate verification steps into workflows; and design assignments that require reflection and critical evaluation of AI-generated content. These measures help ensure AI is used to enhance learning rather than undermine it.
