These figures highlight a critical issue: for many children, school lunch may be the most reliable source of a balanced meal during the day. If millions of students depend on free or reduced-price meals, the quality and nutritional content of those meals are essential for health and learning.
The National School Lunch Program costs the federal government billions of dollars annually, with federal funding covering the vast majority of program expenses. School Lunch Legislation
The National School Lunch Act, signed into law in 1945, created the National School Lunch Program to address food security and to help manage agricultural surpluses in postwar America. Decades later, concerns about childhood obesity and inadequate nutrition led to renewed efforts to update school meal standards.
In 2010, Congress passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, mandating stronger nutrition standards for school meals. The legislation directed the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to develop updated guidelines emphasizing whole grains, fruits and vegetables, low-fat and fat-free dairy, and lean proteins. The law also encouraged the use of local produce when possible and required periodic audits to ensure compliance with the new standards.
