Why Modern Math Textbooks Don’t Add Up

Open a conventional high school mathematics textbook and you’ll typically find a team of college-level experts listed as authors, evidence of pilot testing, and a history of multiple development cycles. After collecting feedback from schools and academic reviewers, the publisher compiles and packages a complete set of instructional materials that teachers are expected to use in the classroom.

When a textbook adoption succeeds, a district usually purchases that program and plans to use it for five to eight years. Teachers receive training on how to implement the materials and, when the adoption cycle ends, districts repeat the process—evaluating and selecting new textbooks that often look and feel very similar to the ones they replace.

What is striking about this model is its assumption that a single textbook can adequately serve every district, school, classroom, and teacher. That “one size fits all” approach forces compromises at every level: districts, administrators, teachers, and students. The result is predictable: many educators remain dissatisfied and districts rarely reuse the same materials without significant modification. That outdated approach creates the opportunity—and the urgent need—for modern, customizable instructional resources that put educators in control.

From Static to Dynamic

Many current math textbooks promote a scripted, uniform method of instruction and insist that the greatest challenge is ensuring teachers follow that plan “with fidelity.” Like cookie-cutter workforce training models that no longer suit a varied labor market, this rigid instructional model no longer fits the realities of modern classrooms.

Educators generally accept textbooks as necessary, despite recognizing how inflexible and cumbersome they can be. When every school receives the same resources, those materials inevitably match no one’s needs perfectly. Encouragingly, many teachers and curriculum leaders are actively searching for better options—resources that adapt to different classroom contexts rather than forcing teachers to adapt themselves.

Teachers Are People Too

It’s widely acknowledged that students are unique, but less often noted that teachers are as well. Districts differ by demographics and budget; teachers vary in experience, training, and subject-matter expertise. While personalized learning for students has gained attention, there is a parallel need to differentiate and personalize resources for teachers so they can be most effective.

In response, online marketplaces and resource hubs such as Teachers Pay Teachers, LearnZillion, and popular social platforms have emerged to give teachers access to targeted lessons and ideas. Nonprofit and open-source projects—like Khan Academy, Mathematics Vision Project, EngageNY, Illustrative Mathematics, and Open Up Resources—have also created robust content that challenges the textbook monopoly. These efforts help, but no single resource can meet every district’s needs. Teachers require systems that allow them to assemble, modify, and extend materials in coherent, standards-aligned ways.

It’s Time for Education to Catch Up

Across many industries, mass-produced “one size fits all” products are being displaced by small-batch, customized alternatives. Consumers now expect the ability to tailor products and services—craft beverages, custom-fit equipment, curated music playlists, and on-demand manufacturing with 3D printers are just a few examples. Education should follow that trajectory.

Teachers are increasingly taking initiative, tailoring or replacing traditional materials to better suit their classrooms. But doing so manually is time-consuming and inconsistent. Point solutions can fill isolated gaps, but technology can offer far more powerful, systemic solutions—platforms that enable districts and teachers to create coherent programs tailored to their standards, student needs, and instructional approaches.

Tailored Resources at Their Fingertips

To perform at their best, math teachers need flexible, high-quality resources that can be adapted to each school’s context and each teacher’s expertise. The ideal solution is not merely a collection of static lessons but a responsive platform that allows educators to tailor curricula, assemble coherent courses, and generate targeted modules on demand.

Some districts have already built custom curricula by hand, but what’s missing is an easy-to-use system with ready-made building blocks, intelligent sequencing, and embedded logic to ensure standards and objectives are addressed efficiently. A “next-generation” curriculum platform should provide unlimited capacity on an affordable model—allowing districts to mix, match, and modify materials while maintaining coherence and quality.

Such a platform would empower teachers to deliver instruction that reflects local priorities and diverse classroom needs: dynamic, tailored curriculum for a dynamic world.
