How Parents, Students and High Schools Navigate College Prep

schooldYou can literally hold your future in the palm of your hand. Meet the career and college-planning app, Schoold.co, a mobile tool that brings personalized college and career guidance to students and families.

Today’s students and parents have access to an unprecedented volume of information about college and careers. Yet sifting through endless web pages and conflicting advice can be overwhelming. With thoughtful planning and reliable resources, however, students can avoid costly mistakes—graduating with heavy debt and no clear career path. Schoold.co aims to simplify that planning process by centralizing research, financial guidance, and career exploration into one app.

In 2006, National-Louis University asked me to build, launch and manage its first graduate advising program. Between 2006 and 2011 I advised more than 2,500 teachers—some pursuing endorsements or certifications, others completing an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. Over those five years a consistent set of concerns surfaced in conversations with students: inadequate research, mounting student loan debt, and poor career decisions.

I Didn’t Do My Homework
College is a time of discovery, often accompanied by major life transitions: new responsibilities, social demands, and part-time work. Many students don’t fully consider long-term consequences such as debt or career fit. Preparing early—researching colleges, housing, costs, and career outcomes—should begin long before classes start and continue through graduation. If Schoold.co had been available when I was advising, I would have recommended it to every student. The app aggregates resources tailored to each user and supports thoughtful decision-making from the college search through career entry.

Free, personalized advice for parents and students: Schoold.co offers detailed career and college-planning guidance in an easy-to-use mobile format. The app covers everything from college search and admissions strategies to financing options and career fit assessments.

Student Loan Regret
Despite widespread access to information, student loan debt in the United States has reached alarming levels. The burden of higher education financing is a major concern for students and families. The article highlighted several troubling facts about student debt, including current national totals, widespread borrower confusion about loan terms, and the far-reaching consequences of unpaid student loans. Grants and scholarships often go unclaimed—money that could reduce the need for borrowing.

  • Nationwide student loan totals are in the trillions.
  • Many borrowers do not fully understand loan terms before signing.
  • Some borrowers are surprised to learn the government has collection tools such as wage garnishment and tax-refund offsets.
  • Programs and grants designed to reduce borrowing are frequently unused.

Schoold includes a scholarship discovery tool that surfaces grants and awards tailored to each student’s college, major, and interests. This scholarship function helps users identify funding opportunities that can reduce reliance on loans and lower overall education costs.

Career Choice
Choosing a major and a college shapes a student’s future earning potential, job prospects, and satisfaction. Too often students select majors for the wrong reasons—popularity, perceived ease, or lack of information—rather than because those majors align with their skills and labor market demand. The rapid pace of technological change and automation makes it even more important to choose fields with solid growth prospects and transferable skills.

Schoold helps students explore careers and assess the return on investment for different college and major combinations. The app offers information about projected employability, potential earnings, and growth trends so students and families can make informed choices that balance passion with realistic opportunity.

At a young age, making life-altering decisions can be intimidating. Students need accessible guidance, quality data, and a place to compare options. Schoold’s design emphasizes clarity and personalization to guide students through every step of the process.

Joe Ross, president and COO of Schoold, explains: “The choice of a college and a major literally sets the stage for a young person’s future career options, earning potential, and job satisfaction. Schoold simplifies an unnecessarily confusing, complex process for students and families with a customized, intuitive app powered by rigorous data science.” I agree—especially since the app is free for students.
