Over 550 School Districts Chose Lexia Core5 or PowerUp Literacy

More than 550 school districts selected Lexia literacy programs in recent months, expanding their use across 48 states and the District of Columbia.

Educators are increasingly turning to science of reading–aligned approaches to strengthen literacy outcomes. In the fourth quarter of 2023, more than 550 districts purchased or renewed licenses for Lexia Core5 Reading (Core5) and Lexia PowerUp Literacy (PowerUp), bringing these programs into over 1,375 schools. Both products are developed by Lexia, a brand within the Cambium Learning Group, and are designed as adaptive, blended-learning solutions that create individualized learning paths based on each student’s needs.

Core5 focuses on accelerating foundational and advanced literacy skills for elementary students—supporting learners who are at risk, on level, or advanced. The program delivers a systematic, structured approach to phonological awareness, oral language, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, using adaptive practice to meet students where they are and progress them efficiently through targeted skill development.

PowerUp is targeted toward secondary readers—students in middle and high school who are non-proficient or struggling. It combines online, student-driven lessons with offline, teacher-led activities to address gaps in core literacy skills while simultaneously developing higher-order reading and analytical abilities. This blended model supports both immediate skill remediation and long-term academic growth.

“Those 550 districts constitute over 1,375 schools that chose Core5 or PowerUp,” said Lexia President Nick Gaehde. “Literacy forms the foundation for all other learning, and it is deeply gratifying that so many schools and districts have trusted us to provide the support they need to make that meaningful change in students’ lives.”

Gaehde added, “Teachers are central to successful implementation. When educators combine effective technology with their professional expertise, dedication, and leadership, students benefit from powerful, personalized instruction.”

Across the Lexia suite, nearly 6.8 million students are currently using these literacy solutions to improve reading and language proficiency. Lexia’s programs have earned national recognition and their effectiveness has been documented in multiple peer-reviewed, research-based studies published in journals such as The Journal of Educational Research and Reading and Writing.

Key advantages of science of reading–based, adaptive blended programs like Core5 and PowerUp include:

  • Personalized learning paths that adapt to student performance, ensuring practice is appropriately challenging.
  • Evidence-aligned instructional sequences that systematically build phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
  • Blended models that combine technology-driven practice with teacher-led lessons, maximizing instructional time and supporting differentiated instruction.
  • Embedded assessments that give educators timely, actionable data to monitor progress and adjust instruction.

School and district leaders selecting these programs often cite the desire for scalable, research-aligned curriculum and tools that support both early literacy development and secondary interventions. The combination of adaptive software, teacher resources, and assessment data helps educators identify gaps, target instruction, and measure growth over time.
