K-5 Teachers Invited to Co-Develop New Writing Curriculum

Discovery Education is inviting elementary educators across the United States to join the development of its newest product, Mystery Writing by Discovery Education, through a free, year-long trial. Individual teachers who wish to participate can claim their free trial directly through the Mystery Writing sign-up page or their school’s Discovery Education account.

Mystery Writing is designed for students in grades K–5 and delivers engaging, “wow!” content that captures young learners’ attention while building writing confidence. The program offers no-prep, open-and-go lessons that make it simple for multi-subject elementary teachers to deliver differentiated instruction. Each lesson explicitly teaches the writing process with clear, step-by-step written, visual, and audio directions so students do not face the familiar barrier of a blank page.

The free trial provides participating educators access to the current collection of genre units and essential skills lessons created for grade 3–5 classrooms. During and after classroom use, educators are asked to provide both qualitative and quantitative feedback about their experience. Discovery Education will use that feedback in real time to refine current lessons and inform the design of future units. This iterative design approach mirrors the process used to develop the CODiE Award–winning Mystery Science by Discovery Education, currently the most widely used K–5 science program in the United States, according to RAND.

Discovery Education’s approach to product development emphasizes the educator voice. “We have long prioritized incorporating teacher feedback into the design of our award-winning resources,” said Pete Weir, Chief Product Officer at Discovery Education. “By inviting elementary educators to try Mystery Writing and share their classroom experiences, we ensure the final product will be effective, easy to use, and embraced by both teachers and students. We encourage any elementary educator to claim the free trial and help shape this resource.”

Participating teachers will find Mystery Writing especially useful for busy classrooms: lessons require minimal preparation, provide clear scaffolds for diverse learners, and can be adapted to different pacing and student needs. The program’s genre-based units expose students to varied writing styles and structures while reinforcing essential writing skills through modeling, guided practice, and independent application. Visual and auditory supports make lessons accessible to early writers and students who benefit from multi-sensory instruction.

Beyond classroom lessons, the trial gives teachers the opportunity to influence product features such as lesson pacing, differentiation options, assessment strategies, and integration with other classroom tools. Discovery Education will collect feedback on usability, student engagement, learning outcomes, and teacher satisfaction. Educators who participate will play an active role in shaping a resource intended to support literacy instruction and foster a love of writing from the earliest grades.
