Thoughtful design and modernization can make classrooms more engaging, more flexible, and better suited to current teaching methods.

Why school design matters for student performance
As children across the country return to school, too many still enter buildings with worn desks, broken chairs, and outdated classroom layouts. More than three-quarters of U.S. school buildings need repairs. The federal government has proposed significant investments in school construction and modernization, but these funds must be allocated strategically. Rebuilding classrooms to mimic the schools of the past—rows of desks and lecture-centered spaces—won’t serve today’s learners and is unlikely to improve stagnant academic outcomes.
Research shows that the physical design of school facilities has a measurable effect on student achievement. A study by researchers at the University of Salford in the U.K. found that building design can influence student performance by as much as 25 percent, with 73 percent of the change in performance linked specifically to classroom design elements. Classrooms that receive abundant natural light, feature ergonomically designed furniture, and allow teachers to reconfigure spaces easily are strongly associated with better academic results. In practical terms, the difference between better-designed and poorly designed classrooms can equal roughly a full year’s worth of educational progress.
Design examples that support learning
Architects and educators have long observed how environment shapes learning. Consider Fuji Kindergarten in Tokyo, designed with Montessori principles in mind. The school maximizes flexible, open space within tight urban confines by avoiding fixed interior walls and using movable furniture so children can navigate and learn in a more fluid environment. Similarly, the 2009 expansion of Manassas Park Elementary in Virginia embraced glass and open areas to bring in natural light and create supervised spaces outside traditional classrooms where students can work and interact.
Architect Sean O’Donnell, whose firm recently modernized Stoddert Elementary School in Washington, D.C., emphasizes the importance of scale and human-centered design. Child-sized environments that adapt as students grow can counteract the impersonal feel of large, institutional school buildings and make schools more inviting for children at every age.
Integrating technology and flexibility
Design must also reflect how deeply technology is woven into the lives of today’s students. A significant portion of young people turn to digital tools and online resources for learning: 43 percent of teens report that the internet is where they learn most easily. Teachers notice this shift as well—77 percent say digital search tools have improved student research habits, according to the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Therefore, modern school design should provide reliable infrastructure for devices, adaptable learning zones for group and individual work, and flexible furniture that supports both screen-based and hands-on activities.
Despite the clear link between school facilities and outcomes, public investment in school construction has fallen. Annual spending on building and modernizing schools dropped from an average of about $20 billion per year between 2000 and 2008 to roughly $11.7 billion this year. This decline undermines efforts to provide learning environments that meet today’s pedagogical and technological needs.
Treat infrastructure as education policy
To support current and future generations of students, policymakers and educational leaders must treat school infrastructure as a core element of education policy. School design should reflect the needs of the students it serves and the teaching philosophies practiced within its walls. That means prioritizing natural light, ergonomic and movable furniture, technology-ready infrastructure, and flexible floor plans that can evolve as curricula and instructional methods change.
Updating America’s education system requires more than changes in curricula or instructional tools—it requires rethinking the buildings where learning happens. As the new school year begins, decision-makers should invest in modern, flexible, and student-centered facilities that enhance learning, well-being, and engagement.
