How do we keep virtual learning human-centric?
Remote, virtual, and distance learning have become part of everyday vocabulary as millions of learners connect with instructors who are not physically present. As more of our interactions move into digital spaces, we should ask: beyond physical proximity, what do we lose when education becomes remote? What risks arise, and how can we design remote learning to remain human-centered?
Learning vs. teaching
It’s important to distinguish learning from teaching. Learning is the internal process of acquiring knowledge, forming understanding, and changing one’s thinking. Teaching is an intentional human activity: a teacher directs attention, transfers knowledge, asks questions, and provokes thought. Teaching requires at least two people—a deliberate relationship between instructor and student—making it inherently human-centric.
There are many sources that can prompt learning: books, apps, experiences, or solitary reflection. These resources can be powerful, but they do not replace the active, interpersonal exchange that teaching provides. You can learn from non-human sources, but you need a teacher to teach—someone who intentionally guides, models, and responds.
When the teacher is not physically close, the dynamics change. The question becomes: what else is necessary to preserve effective teaching when distance replaces proximity?
Living, working, and teaching in the Remote Age
Digitization has transformed tools and processes into digital equivalents, and the internet has ushered in what we can call the Remote Age. This era is characterized by far more interactions across distance than previous generations experienced: email, texting, video conferencing, and collaborative platforms connect colleagues, students, and friends across time zones.
Many professionals routinely work with people who are not nearby; remote work has become normal for a sizable portion of the workforce. Yet education has been slower to follow the workplace’s shift. Why do we hesitate to adopt remote models in schools at the same rate we do in other sectors?
The necessity of remote learning
The hesitation partly reflects the human-centric nature of teaching. Teachers rely on body language, eye contact, and in-person feedback loops to gauge comprehension and engagement. Classroom social dynamics—peer interactions, group activities, and spontaneous discussions—are integral to learning and are harder to replicate remotely, especially for younger students.
Distance learning is commonly chosen out of necessity: when local options are unavailable, when geography or finances limit access, or during crises such as natural disasters or pandemics. Remote learning can expand access and offer flexibility for older students and adults who can self-direct their learning. But for many families and for younger learners, in-person instruction remains the preferred, and often more effective, option.
The impact of dehumanization in education
The COVID-19 pandemic gave the world an unprecedented, if unintended, study of remote education’s limits. When schools rapidly shifted to online formats, many students moved from rich human environments to screen-based interactions. Some learners adapted well to remote formats, but for the broader population the transition exposed real harms: declines in mental health, social isolation, and measurable learning loss, particularly among already vulnerable groups.
Research and observations point to several consequences tied to excessive remote digitization in education. Heavy reliance on digital facsimiles can increase cognitive load as students focus on tools and interfaces rather than on content. It can deepen social separation and reduce meaningful interpersonal communication. For young children, too much screen-based learning can impede motor and perceptual development. Remote formats often reduce spontaneous engagement with instructors and classmates, which in turn lowers information retention and motivation.
Non-negotiable human-centricity in remote education
Because remote learning is often a necessary or preferred option for some learners, it is essential that remote education aggressively preserve human-centric elements. Technology should not merely replicate content; it should recreate social cues, context, and the feel of a live classroom. Tools and platforms must emphasize teacher presence, clear gestures, visible instructional cues (like a teacher at a board), and real-time feedback—elements that signal to learners they are in a human-led learning environment.
Designing for human-centric remote learning means prioritizing clarity, reducing cognitive friction, and enabling natural interactions: eye contact equivalents, visible gestures, and clear shared artifacts such as writing or diagrams. These features help maintain attention, convey intent, and foster the interpersonal exchange critical for teaching.
Priorities and next steps
Our team focuses on engineering solutions—solving complex technical challenges like reliable handwriting detection across varying lighting, angles, and surfaces. Yet the most meaningful impact of that work is often non-technical: restoring the natural gestures and visual cues of in-person teaching. Successful remote education balances sophisticated technology with a relentless focus on human connection.
Human-centricity should be a primary pillar in any effort to improve remote instruction. As new tools evolve to support digital and distance learning, we must ensure they amplify, rather than replace, the human elements of teaching: eye contact, gesturing, timely feedback, and the social dynamics of a classroom.
