Discovery Education Study: New Insights on Student Engagement

Education Insights Report Reveals Engagement Challenges and Clear Opportunities for K–12 Schools

The Education Insights Report by Discovery Education highlights the most urgent challenge facing K–12 educators today: student engagement. Based on survey data collected in August 2024 by The Harris Poll on behalf of Discovery Education, the report represents the perspectives of 1,524 respondents, including students, parents, teachers, and district leaders. The findings identify shared priorities—curiosity, life skills, personalized learning, and trusted technology—and point to practical areas where schools, families, and communities can work together to boost engagement and readiness for the future.

Survey highlights and what they mean

The study shows a generally positive outlook about education’s direction, while also underscoring persistent gaps that affect student motivation and preparedness. Below are the core findings and their implications for classroom practice, professional development, and district-level planning.

  • Curiosity is valued, but opportunities are limited. More than 90% of respondents across stakeholder groups agree that curiosity is central to learning. Yet, a large majority of students (82%) and a substantial portion of teachers (75%) report that current classroom environments do not provide enough opportunities for curiosity-driven exploration. This gap suggests a need to design lessons and learning experiences that intentionally foster inquiry, project-based learning, and student-led investigation.
  • Life skills matter, but instruction falls short. Life skills—such as communication, problem solving, financial literacy, and collaboration—are rated as very important by 88% of district leaders, teachers, parents, and students. Despite this strong consensus, just 57% of students feel their schools are teaching the life skills needed for future success. Districts may consider reviewing curricula and extracurricular offerings to align more closely with real-world competencies and to provide more explicit instruction and practice in these areas.
  • Adaptive learning shows strong educator support. Teachers express high confidence in adaptive learning resources: 93% said such tools would help students learn more effectively. Students also responded positively to pacing flexibility, with 75% indicating that learning at their own pace would increase engagement, empowerment, and readiness. These findings point to the potential of personalized learning technologies and strategies to meet diverse needs and improve outcomes when thoughtfully implemented.
  • Teachers need time-saving tools. Time constraints remain a critical barrier for educators. Ninety-four percent of teachers reported they are looking for classroom tools that free up time so they can focus directly on students. Solutions that reduce administrative burdens, streamline planning, or automate routine tasks can help teachers prioritize instruction and individualized support.
  • Trust in AI depends on education expertise and training. As schools explore artificial intelligence to support instruction, stakeholders emphasize the importance of trustworthy, education-focused design. Seventy-two percent of teachers and parents, and 85% of superintendents, said AI-powered customized learning materials are more trustworthy when developed by education experts. Additionally, 84% of teachers and 90% of superintendents indicated that increased teacher training on AI usage would make AI a more trusted tool in classrooms. This underscores the need for professional learning and governance that ensure safe, pedagogically sound AI adoption.

Next steps and upcoming conversation

For schools and districts looking to act on these findings, key priorities include: creating more opportunities for student inquiry, integrating life skills into curricula and school culture, piloting adaptive learning approaches that allow student-paced progress, investing in tools that return instructional time to teachers, and providing robust training and oversight for emerging technologies like AI. By focusing on these areas, educators and communities can work together to increase engagement and better prepare students for future success.
