How to Succeed in an Online Technical Program

One of the most common questions I hear from students and colleagues is: “What does it take to succeed in an online technical program?” I have taught in online engineering and technology programs for nearly a decade and completed a mathematics degree online myself. From that perspective, here are practical, experience-based strategies that work for students in online engineering, electrical engineering, math, and related technical fields.
Be Resilient
Online technical programs present many moments that can be discouraging—challenging problem sets, stubborn software, or unexpected life interruptions. Persistence is essential. In traditional, in-person classes you often get real-time help and clearer signals about expectations; online learners must be more self-directed. Expect setbacks, learn to troubleshoot, and keep returning to the work. Resilience means asking questions, seeking resources, and maintaining momentum even when topics are difficult.
Reserve Your Space and Time
Establish a dedicated study space and a consistent weekly schedule for your coursework. Communicate those hours to family, roommates, and co-workers so they understand when you cannot be disturbed. From my experience, interruptions multiply if you allow them during scheduled synchronous sessions or focused study blocks. Plan for roughly nine hours of study per week for each online course—this includes reading, assignments, lab work, and discussion participation. Block these hours on a calendar and treat them as immovable appointments.
Get Started Early
Begin assignments early in the week rather than waiting until the deadline approaches. Technical assignments often involve software, simulations, or long problem-solving steps that take time to debug. Starting earlier gives you the buffer to resolve software issues, clarify requirements with your instructor, and iterate on your work. It also reduces stress and improves the quality of your submissions. Instructors are rarely available at the final minute, so early engagement increases the chance of meaningful support.
Get to Know Your Classmates
Most online classes begin with an introductions forum. Use it: read classmates’ posts, reply beyond the minimum, and highlight common interests or career goals. Building relationships early creates a network of peers you can ask for help later and collaborate with during technical discussions. When you recognize someone’s background or see shared experience, you’re more likely to exchange ideas and offer support. These connections can persist after the course and sometimes help with internships, job leads, or collaborative projects.
As the term progresses and discussions grow more technical, continue contributing. Share practical experiences, examples from your work or past classes, and explain your problem-solving steps. That fosters deeper conversations and positions you as a helpful member of the learning community.
Utilize Your Classmates (and Make Yourself Available)
There is a tremendous amount of collective knowledge among your peers. Use discussion boards and email to ask clarifying questions and seek alternate approaches to problems. Always follow your institution’s academic integrity policies—seek guidance and collaboration, but complete graded work according to the rules. When you answer classmates’ questions, you reinforce your own learning and build a reputation as a reliable, professional contributor. Being available to help others leads to reciprocal support when you need it.
These strategies—resilience, disciplined scheduling, early starts, purposeful networking, and collaborative participation—form a practical framework for success in online technical programs.
